The current economic situation in our country is having a devastating impact on businesses of every size and composition. With the high rate of unemployment and the closing of so many businesses, the entire business community is experiencing major challenges to stay profitable and, in many cases, just to “break even”. Non-profits are experiencing a significant decrease in financial support as well. NIA KUUMBA, like so many other non-profit organizations, is experiencing a serious crisis in funding that could seriously impact its ability to continue to provide services that are more important than ever in our community. Our Learning Center continues to provide opportunities for students who are unable to function in a traditional school setting. Since our facility does not center on a “classroom setting” we are able to offer alternative learning methods to the students and adults we serve from the Philadelphia Public Schools, The OIC Program and the Transitional Work Corporation program to name a few. Basic math and reading assistance are provided to these students and interns whenever and wherever we find the need. Many of the clients we serve in our program need assistance with developing the necessary skills to maintain a job after leaving our program as well as many other training programs they come out of. We try to serve as an intermediate step toward success in the “Real World of Work” by assisting our clients with job readiness skills and the ability to get past the “unseen stage” of the job application process. We also support food and clothing distribution to the elderly and other care giver services in the area. We feel that it is important to have alternative learning programs and social services in our community to meet the various needs of people who would otherwise not be able to access these services. We recognize the value of NIA KUUMBA via The Legendary Blue Horizon and how it has become an integral part of North Philadelphia in particular and the Greater Philadelphia area in general. Over the years we have provided social, cultural and entertainment events along with educational training and meeting space for people in our community. Our alternative Learning and Social Service Center has received acclaim from school administrators, college professors, the Small Business Development Center, other agencies and programs in our community. It is becoming increasingly difficult for NIA KUUMBA to continue to provide all of the services that are needed due to increasing costs and the current economic environment. That is why we are reaching out to you to request financial support for our organization. Any amount that you can share will be put to good use right here in the Greater Philadelphia Area.
